Default What does ETHNOS mean in Matt 28:19 ???

Hi to all , and on Feb 20 , 2009 I was looking up a word that its context is not known . Most believers say that it the Great Commission and that we are to " Go ye therefore and teach all Nations ". The conventual wisdom is , that ETHNOS , means in this context , Gentiles ?????

#1 , MATHETEUO , is the Greek word to teach , to give instruction , and to disciple and verse 20 , the context is to teach the Law of Moses to there disciples , what soever I have commanded you .

#2 , In Matt 3:1-12 , the Context is all Jewish or Israel !!!!

#3 , Now lets see that ETHNOS , can be translated by the following ; heathen , Gentile , a mulitude , a nation , or people .

#4 , In Matt 3:2 Baptism was given to Israel to wash and cleanse them for the Millennial Kingdom , but they rejected the counsel of God .

    #5 , In Matt 10:5 we have 3 different races here ;

    #1 , we have ETHNOS , translated Gentiles !!

    #2 , we have SAMAREITES , translated Samaritians !!!

#3 , we have in verse 6 , the house of Israel .

#6 , Notice , that in verse 5 , ETHNOS , is translated Gentiles which I say is correct .

#7 , I have shown just 2 verses where ETHNOS is translated 2 different ways .

#8 , and I submit to all , that they translated it by " all nations , because the commission in Matt 28:19 was given to the 12 Apostles to Baptize all the Jews that were scattered THROUGHOUT the Roman empire as seen in Acts 2:5-11 reveals where they lived and came from .

The Jews had to be saved FIRST , before the Gentiles could be saved , Israel was set aside , then God appointed another ( HETEROS ) which means another of a different kind .

#9 , All Nations , then means the Jews in the world , first , but the leadership rejected the counsel of God , Luke 7:30 .

#11 , So , that means that the Great Commission was to Israel and NOT Gentiles .

Here is Strongs answer for you
    Greek Strong's Number: 1484

    Cross Reference: TDNT - 2:364,201
    Part of Speech: n n
    Vine's Words: Gentiles, Nation, People

    Usage Notes:

    English Words used in KJV:
    Gentiles 93
    nation 64
    heathen 5
    people 2
    [Total Count: 164]

probably from <G1486> (etho); a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe; specially a foreign (non-Jewish) one (usually by implication pagan) :- Gentile, heathen, nation, people.

Col 2:8 -10 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

The NIV translates that verse as all nations

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

That's a big assumption on your part. On what basis do you say that.

It is a shame that the word "gentile" appears any where in English Bibles. Ethnos does not mean gentiles, even if it is a common paraphrase.

    huh

Hi Steveg , and I believe that Marl 16:15 -18 , will see its implentation in The last part of the 3 1/2 years of the Great Tribulation , wnem the 144,000 are sealed to protect them from any deadly drink in Rev 8:11 , and from serpents in Rev 9:19 .

Hi Steveg , and in Matt 28:16 , He is speaking to the 11 .

In Matt 28:18 , He is still speaking to the 11 !!!

Now , in verse 20 , what do you thing that they , the 11 , were to teach them , Law or Grace ????

    The 11 , soon to be 12 , were Law keepers !!!!!

The CONTEXT is still Jewish !!!!!!!
