Default Remarriage after bereavement

This is a spin-off question from the purgatory thread, which is getting so full I don't want to add another sub-thread! Lambsy quoted one of the early church fathers:

Tertullian, Monogamy 10, 1 213 AD "A woman, after the death of her husband, is bound not less firmly but even more so, not to marry another husband...Indeed, she prays for his soul and asks that he may, while waiting, find rest; and that he may share in the first resurrection. And each year, on the anniversary of his death, she offers the Sacrifice."

This seems to be saying that remarriage after bereavement isn't acceptable, but Paul in Corinthians says it is (subject to the new spouse being a Christian). And certainly in the OT it was OK, if I remember correctly there were even rules about having to marry your brother's widow if he died, or something like that?

Thoughts?

In OT times the idea of marring your brothers widow had to do with keeping there inheritance in the family name. However that no longer apllies since Jesus came into the world. If a person remarries now after the loss of a spouse passes. It is fine it is that now you should not marry anyone who is not a Christian, this is so the new spouse if not a christian they will not lead the christian spouse away from God.
1 Corithians :7 1-16 Paul explains it much better. In Matthew 5: 31,32 Jesus explains more when it comes to divorce.
If you don't mind I would like to ask what is Tertullian Monogamy 10-1 213AD?

Tertullian was one of the most influential church leaders in the early church. "Monogamy" is the title of one of his works, "10-1" is the chapter reference, and "213AD" is the date it was written.

Please do not get upset, but the Bible is the inspired word of God and I would not take the word of anyone over the Bible.
Respectfully, Robert

St Paul advocates that 1 Corinthians 7:39-40.
I was only reading this the other day.............seems like good advice.
Hope it answers your query Eddybear.
