Cat, when I went to see the passion of the Christ, I went with a friend who was a confirmed atheist. In the flogging scene, she quite audibly said,, " LEAVE HIM ALONE !! "
I quietly told her that as upsetting as it was, it was something that had to be done and they didn't know what they were doing but if they thought this was the end of him, they couldn't have been more wrong, this was just the beginning.

That then confirmed atheist is now a lay preacher.
