I know more non-Christians who know what the number of the beast is than the gospel itself. So when God says don't take it, people are really without excuse (Romans 1:20).
The problem throughout Revelation are people who hold the truth down in unrighteousness (Romans 1:18):
Revelation 16:9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
They believe in God enough to blaspheme Him as in Revelation 16:9.
Revelation 16:11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.
Revelation 16:21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, [every stone] about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
They didn't just disbelieve but they blasphemed God because of the hail.
Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
So why would cutting your hand off appease God if you are justified by His blood and therefore saved from wrath through him?
We can't lose salvation and then win His favor through works:
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ezekiel 33:11 Say unto them, [As] I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
We shouldn't have to pay anything:
Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life (not by our works).
1 Thessalonians 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, [even] Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
