    I said that the definiton,

"Antichrist", therefore means, literally, "someone who stands instead of, or in place of, the real Jesus Christ".

    in line with,,,

It could be someone who falsely claims to be Christ.

It could be a false Christ, promoted by others, in place of the real one.

It could be someone who falsely claims authority to speak for and exercise the authority of the real Christ.

makes sense because it does. The two definitons fit.

The pope never entered my head until you mentioned him.
But it is not the definition given by all the dictionaries I have consulted. It does not line up with the meaning of anti given by dictionaries.

You could equally say that anyone who is a false Christ is against Christ and therefore the standard meaning of anti fits as well.

Once you start accepting Protestant redefinitions of standard words then you are entering a sticky tangle. They have a purpose in redefining words.

    Added:
Another point Lily is that if you look in Scripture

Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the antichrist. (Jn 2:22)

Whoever denies is someone who is against (saying no to) not someone who is instead of.

That's got nothing to do with the 2 definitions on that site tallying Steve. Thats all I said.
Fact of the matter is, the definitons on that site tally.

I have neither started accepting anything or intend to accept anything until I have checked.
I said that in my last post.

Never be overwhelmed by decisions, just consider the right ones and your options will be far fewer.

You have to take the whole term to define the meaning of anti-christ from its use in the Bible.

You could equally say that anyone who is a false Christ is against Christ and therefore the standard meaning of anti fits as well.
Equally means the other way, Steve. You said it yourself.

Once you start accepting Protestant redefinitions of standard words then you are entering a sticky tangle. They have a purpose in redefining words.
Let's leave the Protestant out of it then and go to point like you did when you pointed to scriptures. That is the best way, right, Steve?

Now that verse John 2:22 is not matching up with the verse you had posted.

Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the antichrist. (Jn 2:22)
1 John 2:18-29 is the scriptural reference of that verse 22 you were referring to.

Now before we get to your reference:

1 John 2:18Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 19They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

In application of "against Christ", there would be no need to warn believers about the world as the world is obviously "against Christ", but there is a necessity to warn believers because they draw them away from within.

Below is the proof of how the term anti-christ is used to mean instead of or in place of Christ.

1 John 4: 1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 4Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 5They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

The spirit can be the anti-christ as attempting to take the place of Christ in the worship place to seduce believers away from going to Christ.

So to avoid picking on the Pope as per your earlier reference:

Let us apply to the false belief of calling for the Holy Spirit to come when He is already in you.

#1. It goes against the truth.

2 John 1: 2For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

#2. It goes against the faith

2 Corinthians 13:5Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

#3. It is not after Christ when they call not on Christ

2 Thessalonians 3:6Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

Colossians 2:8Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

2 Corinthians 11: 2For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

So going to your reference: If you read it in context, it is in keeping with what I had just shared in how they were denying the Son and the Father.

1 John 2: 21I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. 22Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. 24Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

John 14: 23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

John 14: 6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

So this is why anti-christ means by its use in the Bible as in place of or instead of Christ because they are offering another Jesus or another spirit to receive, even if they call those spirits the Holy Spirit to hide that rudiment.

It all goes to "not after Christ" which is what the anti-christ is accomplishing by taking His place so that they come to that false spirit or that false prophet instead of Christ Jesus Himself..
A divided hope is an insecure hope and thereby lacking the necessary assurance for that singular hope to be hope.

Let nothing divide your hope in Jesus. Colossians 1:20-23
