Can you imagine the scene, God's just about to create the universe, and then turns round to the angels and says "Sorry guys, we've got a magnet failure, you'll have to wait a couple of months."

I was listening to a scientist from Cern, the other morning on BBC radio 4, ( well, when I said listening, I mean I was nodding and shaking my head and hoping I was nodding and shaking it in the right places ) talking about the "God particle" or " Higgs Boson" particle.

But can someone explain in Lily language what the higgs boson particle is please ?

Lily do not get too worked up over the name the God particle. It is merely a clever name used to get attention. The term was coined by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman.

In a nutshell, everything in the universe is made of 12 fundamental particles which are governed by 4 fundamental forces, the gravitational force, the electromagnetic force, the weak nuclear force, and the strong nuclear force. At the beginning of the universe the four forces were combined into to one Super Force. No one knows how they were combined or how they broke apart. This then would be going back to the earliest time of the universe.

Now why is this important and what does this have to do with the Higgs boson? Mathematically the unification of the four forces requires force-carrying particles to have no mass. However we know that is not true. Force-carrying particles do have mass. Therefore a new theoretical field, a new invisible force was suggested called the Higgs field. The Higgs field would produce the Higgs boson. If a mass less particle came into contact with the Higgs field they are given mass by means of the Higgs boson. The more a particle interact with field the heavier its mass becomes.
