Thanks for all your support and prayers. I know they have been making a difference.

My FIL has been making small steps in the right direction. He has more understanding than he had, and is now able to read a newspaper. There has been some improvement in his speech, some words are coming back, but there are still plenty of things that won't come out right. And there is some feeling in his right side, but certainly not 100%. When we saw him this evening though he was really really tired, despite having slept during the day, so we didn't stay long.

Mrs Bear and I are pretty whacked, her especially, though one blessing for me was the night before last, when I had the best night's sleep I've had for I can't remember. Had a patch of 5 hours without waking, which for me is exceptional, so I believe that's an answer to prayers for strength.

Thanks again, please do keep praying, and I'll keep you updated if anything significant happens.

Time for an update, after a busy week.

First of all, thank you all for your prayers, and may God bless you all. In general there have been small steps in the right direction in his recovery. He wasn't so good when we saw him on Thursday, but was much brighter again yesterday. Speech is still the main problem (apart from other health issues that he had before the stroke, and are unrelated), though we haven't yet seen him walk, so don't know how that is going. He still hasn't got proper sensation in his right side, for example yesterday while we were visiting him, his arm knocked over a jug of water, and he didn't even notice because he didn't feel the contact.

The next couple of days will be very important, as tomorow he is being taken by the Occupational Therapist to his home, so she can assess how well he could cope there. And then on Tuesday, there is a "multi-discipline team meeting" to discuss what the best way forward is for him. There could be some difficult conversations to be had, so your prayers for those meetings in particular would be especially appreciated. Thanks

Well, I promised an update if anything significant happened.....

In terms of the stroke, he is continuing to make steady progress. Feeling in right side has improved, as has speech a bit, and he seems to be doing pretty well in himself. But here's the bad news.....

He had been having digestive problems for some time, which were under investigation. They have now found out what is wrong: he has colon cancer, which is partially blocking the colon. It needs a major op, but they cannot say yet whether the op will be curative or only palliative, and they need to do more scans to see whether the cancer has spread to anywhere else like his liver.

To make matters more complicated, the scans they did on his neck artery after the stroke have shown a constriction, which means he can't have the colon op until they open up the artery, as the anaesthetic would be too risky. And they can't do the artery op until his brain has had more time to recover, otherwise the increased blood flow could cause a bleed in the damaged area.

That news left us reeling. I know God has got things covered, but from where we stand things are very uncertain at the moment, and it looks like we're in for a long haul on this one. Continued prayers will be very much appreciated.
