Cessationism - some of the gifts exist today
Before I begin the topic of Cessationism, I want to say that relationships are a two way street. Friendships are reciprocol or complimentary so if someone feels that they can't discuss a topic that goes against a non-essential view they hold on the Christian faith that doesn't hurt their salvation then they have a right to do that but it doesn't contribute to our relationship. I have held back and listened to what other people have said because I have been a listener to them so I did my part in a reciprocal relationship on this board.
There are other viewpoints, however and while I would like to finalize what I believe, I can't until I figure out from scripture by discussing (what some may not want to do) or until God shows me (something you may not be able to do). But if you don't want me to ruin your faith or the gift in your faith then turn away now.
There is a view that none of the gifts exist today but that is not one of the topics I choose to discuss. The topic I wish to discuss is Cessationism or the view that some of the gifts exist today. I'm referencing some of my information from "Systematic Theology" (Volume Four, Church / Last Things) by Dr. Norman Geisler
The argument goes like this: Some of the gifts exist but others have passed away. There were supernatural gifts like the "signs of an apostle" (2 Cor. 12:12) and when the Apostles passed away the supernatural sign gifts passed away.
2 Cor. 12:12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
Being an apostle is unique as you had to have seen the risen Christ (1 Cor. 9:1) and only certain people living back then could have been called or qualify. Signs of an apostles include tongues and initially only the apostles spoke in tongues (a weak argument I will explore) and others could not receive tongues except for the laying on of hands (Acts 8:18) which is an interesting argument supported partly by these two verses:
2 Timothy 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
Romans 1:11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;
There is also an argument that the gift had ceased since there were people the Apostles weren't able to heal:
1 Timothy 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.
2 Timothy 4:20 Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.
It is also implied by the writer of Hebrews that the Apostle's message were confirmed by a past event:
Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him];
Hebrews 2:4 God also bearing [them] witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
The other argument was the gifts were always successful with Jesus and because the gifts aren't sucessful today then they may or must have passed away.
