Much warmer here this morning and we have a thaw going on thank goodness. Hope there is no more on the way, I hate the stuff.

Change in the weather is not necessarily the same as global warming or global climate change. In this country we are very affected by both the gulf stream and the jet stream. Slhifts in these change our weather. If our weather is changing because of changes in the patterns of these it does not necessarily mean the global climate is warming. There are many factors involved.

Slight thaw up here in Merseyside too. I hope that's all the snow and ice for the winter.

My friend from Sweden was laughing over how everything comes to a standstill in England, with just a little bit of snow. She said her country and others get much more and they cope as usual. Transport keeps going and the schools keep going. They have heavy snow every year. She said they have special winter wheels and chains on the buses. There again they may only be suitable for thicker snow and we get thin snow and ice, which I think is far more dangerous. Though they would go through a stage of the snow thawing out and being dangerous which would be the equivalent or similiar to our conditions, where every thing stops.

I think the problem here is that the current conditions are quite rare so no-one is prepared to spend money on tyres chains etc. Motorists complain that councils aren' prepared with enough snow ploughs and grit but then how many motorists get stuck because they don't have snow tyres or chains, or indeed even a spade and sacking in the boot?

Similarly people don't have studded foortware for such conditions.

We used to have snow like this every year and we didn't get into the mess we are in now, as Steve says we were prepared. Another thig which has changed is the type of cars we run, they are more powerful and tend to have wider tyres with not as much tread - not a good combination for the snow. Everyone is in a rush and tend not to care about anyone else (this is a generalisation, I know some people do care), they do not ajust their driving to suit the conditions and if there is a space they are going to have it irespective of how difficult this makes it for someone else.

A typical example of this happened quite near to my house a couple of days ago: A lady was driving her car up the hill and got stuck, she slid sideways in the road and blocked it for everyone else. She made no attempt to move the car, just got out locked it and started to walk away. When asked what she was doing she replied 'well there's nothing else I can do' The chap said to her 'well it ain't stopping there blocking the road for everyone else' and he and another guy pushed the car into the side of the road in it's locked state as she refused to get back in again!

This is the point I was trying to make about how I have watched things change over the years.
There was some hint that because its been so cold of late then that is proof that global warming is a myth. It's proof of no such thing, years ago when I was a kid and teenager, this is what winters always were then it was all change but youngsters growing up now who have never known anything but a mild climate in winter, think its unusual.
This is what winter really should be like, doesn't make me like the snow but this was a typical winter even right up to coming out of my teens. I'm not saying its a myth or not, all I can do is say what I have witnessed and I have definately seen a change and " something " has been happening with our climate, thats no myth.
