    Default Iceland.

    I don't know if my eyes are decieving me or, with the news about the latest ash problems from Iceland being in the news and I'm unconsciously seeing what my eyes want me to see but, when I was looking through my kitchen window yesterday, I honestly thought I saw teeny, tiny flakes of snow. Then I thought, nooooo, they must be dandilion seeds flying around in the air. But looking now, this morning, with a soft drizzle of rain falling, I can still see it.

    Am I correct in thinking that rain would stop seeds flying around so much or am I actually seeing ash from Iceland ?

    Another question.

    With volcano's erupting almost all the time in all parts of the world, why has this one in particular caused so much disruption to air traffic ?

    Lily, I think the real problem is when water gets into the Volcano and it then spews out chunks of ice with all the grit through it...... it just seems to hang around longer. What I don't understand is, that this volcano has erupted lots of time before, but suddenly there's a problem. I think someone is finding it helpful to them to cause all the disruption, and may even be making money out of it;

    Oh, so the problem is more with the ice rather than ash. Thankyou Haggie

    Try saying Eyjafjallajökull

    I reckon that's where Lambsy has disappeared to and it's no eruption, he's having a barbecue.

    I could be wrong Lily but someone told me that it is because this volcano is throwing out ash rather than lava. Some volcano erupt with lava and some with ash, if it is the lava then it will just run down the sides and set but the ash plumes up into the sky and then is carried by the wind. (is that peculiar word the name of the volcano?)

    If I might get technical.

    All volcanoes give out ash and lava. The difference with this on is that the ice and snow was getting into the volcane and the ash was coming up mixed with steam. This caused the ash to further explode and break down into very fine particles (almost like dust) This dust is so fine that it stay up in the atmosphere longer. (heavier dust will fall down sooner). Because of the jets of steam formed by the ice etc falling in to ther volcanoe,the dust is carried to a higher level and that is where the aircraft fly.

    Sorry if this is too confusing.

    God sent fire and brimstone over Sodom & Gomorrah becuase of their immorality. He has sent volcanic ash over Europe.

    I know a guy who was delayed going to Canada because of the ash. The ash reached Labrador and Quebec, too, but in lower quantities than in Europe, I think.
