The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed.
To get a certain level of understanding about the New Testament you have to go back. If you are going to have any kind of sensible debate about any part of the New Testament, you have to have knowledge of certain things.
1. To realize that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of numerous prophecies and if you were debating with a Jew ( or anyone for that matter ) and you were pleading the case for Christ ( not just your faith or belief ) and you announced it was all prophecized, how are you going to proove the case for Christ with any conviction ( like you should ), if you haven't got a clue where those prophecies are ?
2. To understand the cultural and historical circumstances into which Jesus was born.

Those words sound familiar ? Even the first verse of the Old Testament is recalled by John.
1 Chronicles 24:1-18 gives us a historical setting. It also gives us a cultural setting, a nation, a kingdom, with a priesthood.
Without knowing the history of Israel, all the way back to Abraham, Noah, and even Adam, the New Testament lacks a critical dimension and critical information.
Even Jesus himself spoke of the Old scrolls in many places in the New Testament and when the authors of the New Testament books wrote in ways that reveal the Old Testament, they did so because God told them to.
How are we to understand what many New Testament passages really mean if we don't know the cultural setting into which Jesus was born ?
A simple example, Luke 1:5. If you want to plead the case for Christ with any true conviction, then its more than knowing who these people were or having heard their names.
Everything about Christ, life, ministry, Passion, death, and Resurrection, is the fulfillment of Scripture. About a dozen times Matthew tells us that some action of Christ was done "to fulfill what was spoken" by some prophet.
In Marks Gospel he starts by hitting the nail on the head. Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God. But he starts by setting the stage for John the Baptist and brings in Isaiah the prophet. If we don't know the Old Testament, then we won't have a clue who Isaiah was, when he lived or what he prophecised.
No, if you truely want to plead the case for Christ, you " have " to know your Old Testament.
Never be overwhelmed by decisions, just consider the right ones and your options will be far fewer.
i mean lily we don,t follow the old testament.and if you do follow the old testament then there would be lots of curses on you for denying Christ.
I have found for example the Psalms a great help in times of great need, so where i previously really felt God was speaking to me through them, He was not, because i shouldnt be 'going there' with the Psalms?

I understand what you say to a certain degree, yes, agreed. If we did then we would still be stoning people and there happens to be a law that carries a manditory life sentence, murder.i mean lily we don,t follow the old testament.
