    Default Selling Alcohol in Church

I have wandered into here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/mid/7361315.stm from a link posted earlier...

I am a member of the Church in Wales and have recently renewed the licence for the church I attend, we have had a licence to sell alcohol for some years. The profits go to the restoration fund,,,the building is very old and takes a great deal of work to keep in order.

I just wonder which is more important the restoration and upkeep of a beautiful and old building (which in all fairness is very well attended and part of a large community),,,,, or,,,,,, the welfare of even just one of those attendees.

My personal opinion is that alcohol should NOT be in churches--let alone sold there. I can just see church members bringing their bottle from home to a potluck they're having after the morning service. Then everyone drives home drunk.
Secure in Christ--indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

A small bar is a possibility. I would love to think that at certain times of the year people could come down in the evening to have a drink." from the article.

Might throw a real clog in the wheel when having to pray for members who are alcoholics!

I rarely drink now because the situation doesn't come up and I no longer go to bars....but if I'm eating dinner at someone's house who's religion doesn't have a problem with a bottle of wine or drinks....I don't have a problem with it at all. I'm not sure if a church should SELL it....but I wouldn't care if they did.

    Oooh, a no-no, for sure.
Many people have a problem with alcohol and drink to excess, and this would just be catering to their weakness. There are a million ways to make money that don't include something that may cause your brother to err. I'd pray for God to show you some of those ways before I'd resort to selling alcoholic beverages.

What next? Playboy magazines, R-rated videos? It's a slippery slope and easier to compromise in other areas if you give in to the first questionable temptation. That's JMHO.

My first thought was "Oh dear", but then I read the article more closely. He wants the licence to be able to sell alcoholic beverages at special occasions, such as weddings. Loads of alcohol at a wedding? Well, at the one Jesus went to in Cana, He was the one who provided it!

Having said that, I do appreciate that alcohol can cause some to stumble, and maybe in this day and age, when I suspect alcoholism is far more of a problem than it was in Jesus' day, this might not be the best idea the church has ever had.

Good grief, whatever next! OK, if you wanted to be clever, you could say what about Holy Communion, but to me it is as disrespectful as smoking inside a church.

Absolutely nothing unbiblical about drinking, it's the getting drunk part that's unbiblical.
Never be overwhelmed by decisions, just consider the right ones and your options will be far fewer.

Pr 23:31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly!

I understand this to refer to wine that is attractive to drink. That is drinking for the sake of it. Yes Jesus provided wine for the wedding but was that mature high alcohol wine or was it new low alcohol wine.

All wine contains alcohol unless it it treated chemically to remove it. All wine in biblical times was alcoholic. The older the wine was the more alcoholic it became.

I agree with Lily that the Bible is against drunkeness. Our church changed to non-alcohlic communion wine because we had a sister who was a former alcoholic and by doing this we removed the temptation.

Ask they question WHY? If it is social drinking then that is a slipery slope. If is ONLY as part of a meal and is in moderation the I do not think that the Bible condemns that.
If we disagree , at least one of us is wrong!

People can be addicted to food and caffeine, should we remove these from our churches as well? Could tempt people to stumble perhaps?
