Chapter8:7
A third a significant miniority of earths Vegetation, mans enviroment, is destroyed.
v. 8,9 A great mountain burning with fire suggests a volcano whose ashes pollute the sea.
V.8: 10,11 The fresh waters are polluted. Wormwood: A bitter herb, sometimes poisonous, symbolizes the tragic results of sin (see Jer. 9:15; 23:15).
V.12 These symbolic cosmic convulsions are partial disruptions not to be compared with the final coming of Jesus.
V.13 An angel; The preferred marginal reading of "eagle" refers to a "vulter," a bird of pray.
9:1 A star fallen from heaven refers to an unidentified denomic being, possibly Satan himself, a fallen angel (see 9:11; 12: 7-12;
Is. 14: 12-14; Ezek 28:11-17). The bottomless pit, literally "the shaft of abyss," is the resevoir of evil (see 9:11; 11:7; 17:8; 20:1-3).
V. 9:2 Smoke is a symbol of deception.
V. 3 Locusts symbolize denomic beings ( see Ex. 10:12-15; Joel 1:1
-2:11). As the scorpions is a simile indicating excruciating pain.
( Luke :19).
V.9:4 Demons cannot harm those who are sealed by God. ( Eph.1:13)
V.9: 5,6 Five months represent a limited period of time, corresponding to the life cycle of a locust. Torment: The purpose is not to destroy, but to lead to repentance.
V. 9: 7-10 Locust actually resemble little horses. The vivid symbolic decription is intended to terrify.
V.9: 11-12
These are not physical locust
( see Prov.30:27), but denomic forces under the direction of the angel named Abaddon, "Destruction" (see Job 26:6) or Apollyon. " Destroyer"
(see i Cor. 10:10).
