Luke 8:22-25 - The Storm
Luke 8:22-25
One day he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” So they set sail, and while they were sailing he fell asleep. A squall blew over the lake, and they were taking in water and were in danger. They came and woke him saying, “Master, master, we are perishing!” He awakened, rebuked the wind and the waves, and they subsided and there was a calm. Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?” But they were filled with awe and amazed and said to one another, “Who then is this, who commands even the winds and the sea, and they obey him?”
I’ve just been reading an interesting commentary on this.
What did Jesus mean by asking them “Where is your faith?” He didn’t say any more and they didn’t reply but discussed it among themselves. The issue seems to have been faith. We can assume that fishermen like Peter were among the disciples (presumably the twelve) who must have been accustomed to such storms blowing up. But what about faith? Faith in what or who?
The commentator points out that Jesus was asleep in the midst of the storm, and wasn’t going to wake up. Was he so tired that even the worst storm couldn’t wake him. Or didn’t he care about the risks?
No, Jesus had said “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” Jesus had faith in his word. He had said they would cross to the other side and they would. He could sleep in peace knowing the outcome would be to get to the other side. The disciples were afraid because they only saw the problem and forgot the words of Jesus
Sometimes we get anxious or panic when things seem to go wrong. But we need to know the promises that Jesus made to us and have faith that God’s word will be accomplished.
“I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work”
