Default Luke 8:22-25 - The Storm

    Luke 8:22-25
One day he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” So they set sail, and while they were sailing he fell asleep. A squall blew over the lake, and they were taking in water and were in danger. They came and woke him saying, “Master, master, we are perishing!” He awakened, rebuked the wind and the waves, and they subsided and there was a calm. Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?” But they were filled with awe and amazed and said to one another, “Who then is this, who commands even the winds and the sea, and they obey him?”

I’ve just been reading an interesting commentary on this.

What did Jesus mean by asking them “Where is your faith?” He didn’t say any more and they didn’t reply but discussed it among themselves. The issue seems to have been faith. We can assume that fishermen like Peter were among the disciples (presumably the twelve) who must have been accustomed to such storms blowing up. But what about faith? Faith in what or who?

The commentator points out that Jesus was asleep in the midst of the storm, and wasn’t going to wake up. Was he so tired that even the worst storm couldn’t wake him. Or didn’t he care about the risks?

No, Jesus had said “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” Jesus had faith in his word. He had said they would cross to the other side and they would. He could sleep in peace knowing the outcome would be to get to the other side. The disciples were afraid because they only saw the problem and forgot the words of Jesus

Sometimes we get anxious or panic when things seem to go wrong. But we need to know the promises that Jesus made to us and have faith that God’s word will be accomplished.

To me, this is an example of the end of days. We must have faith, knowing He is with us as we pass through the storm of the tribulation. We either cross to the other side (the promised land) or we sink into the abyss.

I think we get plenty of storms in our lives before the end days get near us. But scriptures have many applications in our lives.

Steve, I think that was a very good commentary, But i am not sure, if it was about faith in his words or faith in who he was. They were all following him because they felt he was the Messiah, they had already seen him heal the sick and raise the dead. If they were with their messiah, then they should of had no fear. If he was the one that the prophets talked about, then they were not going to die at sea

Maybe the problem was not what he said, but who he was. They did not have enough faith in who he was

I believe we can look at this and see that if we keep our eyes and hopes on Jesus we will pass though the tribulations in our life's, but I don't see this as an end of days verse.

The part about going over to the "other side," made my ears perk up.
