Revelation 14:8-13
Verse 8
And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
We have had one angel flying through heaven with the everlasting gospel now we have one that is saying "Babylon, is fallen". We will see more about who and what this Babylon is when we get to chapter 17. But to just set the foundation for that I will speak a little about Babylon.
In the Bible the foundation and beginning of the city of Babylon was when man built the tower of Babel trying to reach up into the heavens
Genesis 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
Babylon has been associated with false pathways (worship) to God since the times of Nimrod. It was plainly seen in the captivity of Israel and the trials of Daniel, Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego and the forcing of false worship to other gods than the God of Israel. Also you can see that when Israel went after false gods that it was always spoken as a manner of adultery (fornication's) and it is said of Babylon that they made the nations drink the wine of Gods wrath for her fornication (worship of false gods/idolatry). You see that in the time of tribulation the false worship that was Babylon is again prevelant in the world and that God's wrath will cause it to fall.
Verse 9-11
9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
10 the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb
11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
The first angel declared the everlasting gospel, then the second dealt with Babylon and false worship and now we have an angel warning man not to take the mark of the beast (a mark signifies allegiance). Man is warned about following the beast thus finalizing their rebellion against God by siding with the forces of Satan in His assault on the purpose and will of God. There are many speculations as to what the mark is but the bottom line is that striking an allegiance with the work of Satan (the Anti-christ/beast) is taking the mark. This angel warns man against worshipping the beast or taking his mark, so that if a man does take the mark and does worship the beast or his image, he is doing it knowingly. This will be a willful rebellion against God, because he has been deceived into thinking that in the final conflict that will soon be taking place, that Satan and the forces of darkness will be able to overcome the forces of light.
There is also a judgement attached to taking the mark. This is as final as the judgement for blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. There is no forgiveness attached to the judgement of taking the mark of the beast. It says that whoever takes the mark of the beast will be tormented with fire and brimstone forever and will drink the cup of the wrath of God and will not have rest day or night from this torment.
Verse 12-13
12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus
13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
The cost for belief in the tribulation times will be the believers life.
Revelation 6:9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:Revelation 11:7And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
The patience of the believer in the tribulation is that they keep the testimony of Jesus unto death. God says that they are blessed they who die in the Lord during this time. The Lord says that they will rest from their labors in death and that all that they did as believers will follow them in death. The price for belief is higher and harder than it is now.
