I have a copy of The New American Bible, which is a Catholic translation that includes the Apocrypha - it would be my guess that the Study Bible by the same name would be the same, with study helps.

In the study world we were taught that the NASB is considered to be strictly literal.

The KJV and NKJV are considered to be literal.

    and,

The NIV is considered to be thought-for-thought.

I have a copy of most translations as my studies required so much cross referencing it was just easier to grab copies of them than use the library.

Alas, I feel, in my opinion that even though each translation claims to be better in some aspect than other translations, I very much doubt that any today is the basic literal word for word translation because most employ some degree of paraphrasing or putting the Bible into the words of men.

Copywriting is a stumbling block for me when I consider which translation is best.
I say that because modern Bible versions are copyrighted and reason demands that the very fact that a translator has copyright protection, that means that he " must " have made quite a few changes to someone elses work to make his particular version his own.

Never be overwhelmed by decisions, just consider the right ones and your options will be far fewer.

    Just to add to that.
Many say they find the KJV hard to understand because of the old English style of writing but in my opinion, as for memorising it, its far easier.
I mean, even my 3yr old Granddaughter can memorise the words,,, " " He stinketh "

The NKJV is less literal than the KJV.

In spite of that, the NIV is still conservative.

The NKJV is well known to have made changes for the purpose of copyright.

While I'm rippin' on the NKJV, when I read it, it feels like a kludge between a modern translation and the KJV.

I use the NKJV, and am looking to getting the NLT Life Applications Study Bible to go along with it.
