Apparently in that particular country , to stand at the door and knock was deemed highly offensive (Don't bother knocking, just barge straight in!) Don't ask me why! They had an enormous problem but finally got round it by having Jesus say: "I wish to be your guest." Somehow it loses it's power
Good stuff Frederick! I needed a good laugh!

I think the KJV is the most accurate translation, and what few mistakes that are in it are commonly known and minor(eg Hell for Hades). But I do not trust any translation, i prefer to study the origional Hebrew and Greek along with the leading of The Holy Spirit ! Its awsome what is actualy written and sometimes lost in translation. I was once studying to speak on a certain matter, i had about 90 scriptures "in English". I checked them out in the origional languages !! I was left with none!! and only 5 hours to go, The Lord then provided me with about 40 scriptures that all checked out, and because i would not accept anything but the whole truth, i was able to speak with authority and accuracy on the subject.

There's a very orthodox Catholic site which talks about which Bible Catholics should read. The conclusion may surprise you.......

"So, which Bible is the best? Perhaps the best answer is this: The one you’ll read."

Don't they use the Catholic bible with the apocrypha? At least, that's what my mom used to read and she is Catholic. I got her a heavily-commented NKJV for Christmas and she uses that one now.

First of there is many bibles available that have not been recongnised as the inspired word of the Holy Spirit. In the orginal Bible was what's called the Apocrypha. There is 14 books added to the bible, eleven of the books were excepted by the Catholic church that they considered canonised, But other Religous groups rejected them as questionable authorship or authenticity. So they were removed from all Bibles except the Roman Catholic, The Vulgate did include them for a short time. The original Roman Catholic Bible was the Douai which they still used, there is some scirptual differences between that and the KJV and so the Roman Catholic Church wants to approve only what they want there people to read. Originally they ordinary Catholics were not to read the Bible at all. All This was taken from my Illustrated Encyclopedia Dictionary.

Well, we would normally refer to it as the deuterocanon ("second canon") rather than the apocrypha (which implies "false"). But I read bibles with and without the deuterocanonal books. For daily reading I like the NLT one-year Bible, but for more serious study I'll use a combination of the NIV study bible, the RSV (with the deuterocanonal books) or the CTS (Catholic Truth Society; based mostly on the Jerusalem Bible).

Any comments obviously need to be considered carefully, as they are never considered inspired.

You are absolutely correct about that.

I prefer the NIV (nearly Infallible Version)

On my PC I have 9 versions. Most of them are in English. so I can read them.

The modern translations have the benifit of all the ancient documents found in the last fea years and so "should" be more accurate than KJ.

Default Use more than one translation

I have an NIV bible I use but, while I study, I have BibleGateway.com: A searchable online Bible in over 100 versions and 50 languages. open to an Amplified Bible. The pastor I listen to online uses the KJV. I find that there are many times when one translation is truer to the original language (Hebrew or Greek) than the others. A good Bible teacher can help you with that (unless you know Greek or Hebrew). Using different translations for comparison and greater understanding is important.
